As a team MGL Contractors boasts extensive and diverse heavy civil engineering experience and expertise, including in Power Cable Installation.
We recently – as a team – successfully laid the land cable installation associated with the Caithness Moray HVDC Link.
As part of the Caithness Moray 320kV HVDC subsea link we installed 50km of double circuit land cable from the subsea terminations at Wick and Buckie to their respective new convertor stations at Spittal and Blackhillock.
The land cable works involved the establishment of a fenced wayleave for the full route, topsoil strip, construction of temporary access roads over the full length with cable drum hard standings.
The land cable for this project was installed in open trench with ducted sections under all existing water and road crossings and there were interfaces with several major HDDs. All of the HDD’s and ducted crossings throughout the route were filled with thermal grout.
The cables were for the Caithness Moray HVDC Link were bedded and surrounded with a combination of thermal sand and CBS, cable tiles and cable warning tapes laid above prior to completing the backfilling of the trench. Thereafter the temporary access tracks and the wayleave were reinstated.
To facilitate the cable laying works we manufactured a bespoke hydraulic cable drum side lifting trailer with lifting capabilities of over 40 tonnes.
